ASVAB scores by branch: the AFQT each service asks for

Updated Nov 6, 2026

The ASVAB itself has no passing score: each branch sets the lowest AFQT it will enlist, and four of the six publish that number. The Air Force asks for 31 with a high school diploma (seniors and graduates); 50 with a GED. The Army, Marine Corps and Coast Guard figures, and what the Navy and Space Force say instead, are in the table below with a source and check date on every row.

Branch by branch

Army

The Army's floor is 31, and in its own wording it counts your most recent valid score, not your highest. Jobs are matched on line scores such as General Technical (GT), explained on ASVAB line scores. Warrant officer flight training adds its own bar, a GT score of 110 with no waiver (Army flight school requirements).

Air Force

The Air Force is the one branch here with two floors, one for diploma holders and a higher one for GED holders (both in the table). Air Force jobs are assigned on four composites, Mechanical, Administrative, General and Electronic (MAGE), each with its own minimum per specialty. Officer applicants take the AFOQT instead of relying on the AFQT (how the two compare).

Marine Corps

Floor: 31; some military occupational specialties need more. Which specialty asks for more is decided by its line-score minimum, listed with the other branches on ASVAB jobs by score.

The Navy publishes no single number: navy.com says only that you must meet a minimum ASVAB score. Figures quoted elsewhere for the Navy differ from site to site and cite no Navy document we could open, so this page leaves them out. Navy ratings are matched on line-score combinations, and your recruiter can tell you the one your rating uses.

Coast Guard

Floor: 32, one point above the Army's. Like the Navy, the Coast Guard assigns ratings on line scores.

Space Force

The Space Force publishes none either: spaceforce.com asks for "a qualifying ASVAB score", and you apply through an Air Force recruiter. Enlisted Guardians are placed on the same MAGE composites as Air Force airmen.

GED, waivers and the legal limit

By law, recruits with an AFQT of 10 to 30 may be at most 4% of a service's enlistments in a fiscal year, and a recruit without a high school diploma needs at least 31. The same section lets the Secretary of Defense raise a service's 4% limit to as much as 20% (10 U.S.C. § 520(a)(2)). Among the branch pages cited here, only the Air Force's gives a separate GED figure, which is why its row has two numbers.

None of the branch pages cited above prints a waiver score below its floor, so plan on reaching the number rather than on an exception; whether a waiver is open in your case is the recruiter's call. The Coast Guard is explicit about it: Coast Guard Recruiting Command can authorize case-by-case waivers to certain entrance standards; ask your recruiter whether any apply. No AFQT waiver number is published. If you come up short, the retest schedule is first retest after 1 calendar month, second retest 1 month after that, then 6 months between retests, and scores can be used for enlistment for 2 years from the test date.

What an AFQT percentile means, and how the categories from I to V are cut, is on ASVAB scores explained.

Past the floor: jobs and composites

Clearing the AFQT gets you in the door. The job you can hold is decided by line scores in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard, and by MAGE composites in the Air Force and Space Force; each is built from a different mix of subtests, so two recruits with the same AFQT can qualify for very different lists.

Branch minimums: common questions

What ASVAB score do you need for the Air Force?

An AFQT of 31 with a high school diploma; GED holders need a higher score, given in the table above. Each Air Force specialty then sets its own MAGE composite minimum.

Why do websites give different Navy minimums?

Because the Navy does not publish one: navy.com asks only for a minimum score, without a number. Figures on other sites come without a Navy source, which is why they disagree. A Navy recruiter can tell you the current floor.

Does the Army use your highest ASVAB score?

No. In the Army's own wording, your most recent valid score counts, not your highest, so a weaker retest replaces a stronger first one.

Is the Coast Guard minimum higher than the Army's?

By one point on the published figures: Coast Guard 32, Army 31.
