ASVAB line scores and the GT score

Updated Nov 6, 2026facts checked Nov 6, 2026

The AFQT decides whether you can enlist; line scores decide which jobs you qualify for. Each line score is a group of subtest scores added together, and the report carries both: AFQT for enlistment; line scores (Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Coast Guard) or MAGE composites (Air Force, Space Force) for jobs.

The Army GT score

General Technical (GT) is Verbal Expression plus Arithmetic Reasoning. Verbal Expression (VE) is itself a scaled combination of Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension, so GT rests on three subtests: two about words and one about word problems.

GT is the line score people search for most, and it matters beyond enlisted jobs. Warrant officer flight training is one example: the Washington Army National Guard's aviation page asks for a GT of 110, with no waivers; the rest of that path is on Army pilot requirements.

GT is not an IQ score. It is a sum of two ASVAB results, and it moves with the same study that raises the AFQT: Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Arithmetic Reasoning.

Air Force and Space Force: the MAGE composites

The Air Force reports four composites, Mechanical, Administrative, General and Electronics, as percentiles from the same subtests (see the matrix above). Every Air Force job lists a minimum on one or two of them, for example "G55 and M55". Space Force applicants test through an Air Force recruiter and are read the same way.

The published minimums for 26 jobs, from Security Forces to Cyber Warfare Operations, are on jobs by ASVAB score.

ASVAB line score questions

What does VE mean on the ASVAB?

Verbal Expression, a scaled score built from Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension. It enters the AFQT and many line scores, the Army GT among them.

Is the GT score the same as an IQ?

No. GT is Verbal Expression plus Arithmetic Reasoning from your ASVAB, used for Army job placement.

Which subtests make up the Army GT score?

Word Knowledge and Paragraph Comprehension, as Verbal Expression, plus Arithmetic Reasoning. Raising any of the three raises GT.
