ASVAB vs AFOQT: the enlisted test and the officer test
Updated Nov 6, 2026
The ASVAB is the enlistment test for every branch; the AFOQT is the Air Force and Space Force officer test. Most applicants need only one of them, and the path you apply for decides which. Where they overlap is a handful of math, vocabulary and reading subtests, not the scoring.
ASVAB and AFOQT, row by row
| Attribute | ASVABArmed Services Vocational Aptitude BatteryPractice | AFOQTAir Force Officer Qualifying TestPractice |
|---|---|---|
| Who takes it [1][2][3][4][5] | Everyone who enlists in any branch; Air Force officer applicants take the AFOQT instead | Air Force and Space Force officer applicants (Officer Training School, AFROTC) and every Air Force pilot, CSO and ABM applicant |
| What the score decides [2][3][4][6][7][8] | Enlistment eligibility (AFQT) and job qualification (each branch's line scores) | Officer selection and AFROTC contracting; the Pilot composite also feeds the PCSM score with TBAS and flying hours |
| Format [1][3][9][10] | Computer-adaptive (CAT-ASVAB) at MEPS and most MET sites; paper and pencil at only a handful of MET sites | Fixed-length timed subtests on a computer at a Pearson VUE test center (not adaptive); a voucher from your recruiter or test control officer is required to schedule |
| Subtests [1][3][10] | 9 scored areas (10 timed subtests on the computer, where Auto and Shop Information are split) | 12 subtests, 7 composites |
| QuestionsScored questions where the test owner publishes a count; adaptive subtests vary in length. [1][3][10] | 135 scored questions on the computer; 225 on paper | 516 multiple-choice questions (Pearson VUE) |
| Time at the testThe figure each owner gives for the whole sitting. [1][3][10] | About 2 hours on average for the computer test; the paper session takes 3 to 4 hours | About five hours including breaks; every subtest has its own time limit |
| Score scale [6][10][11] | Subtest standard scores (mean 50, standard deviation 10); the AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99 | Composite percentiles from 1 to 99 against the applicant norm group, not percent correct |
| Minimum scores [2][7][12][13][14][15][16] | Set by each branch, not by the test; AFQT 31 for the Army, the Marine Corps and Air Force high school graduates, 50 for Air Force GED holders, 32 for the Coast Guard | Verbal 15 and Quantitative 10 to commission; Pilot 25 for pilot and RPA pilot, CSO 25 for CSO, ABM 25 for ABM (rated minimums, not waivable)as of Nov 6, 2026 · published by AFROTC detachments citing DAFMAN 36-2664; check with your recruiter or detachment |
| Calculator [1][3][17] | No calculator | AFPC's pamphlet does not mention a calculator; it says scratch paper is providedas of Nov 6, 2026 · no calculator rule is published; ask the test administrator |
| Blanks and guessing [3][6][9] | Never leave an item blank; on the computer, items you do not reach are scored as random guesses (a penalty), and on paper a blank counts as wrong | No penalty for guessing, so answer every item even if you have to guess |
| Retakes [2][8][10][11][18] | First retest after 1 calendar month, second retest 1 month after that, then 6 months between retests | Wait at least 90 days between attempts; two attempts, a third only with an approved waiver |
| Score that counts [7][8][11] | The Army counts your most recent valid score, not your highestas of Nov 6, 2026 · Army wording (goarmy.com); ask your recruiter how your branch treats a retest | A superscore, your best score on each composite across all valid attempts |
| Scores valid for [2][10][11][19] | Scores can be used for enlistment for 2 years from the test date | AFPC does not publish an expiry for AFOQT scoresas of Nov 6, 2026 · no expiry rule is published; ask your recruiter |
Do officers take the ASVAB?
Not as their officer test. The ASVAB is the enlisted test, and the Air Force states that its officer applicants take the AFOQT instead; Navy officer programs use the OAR or the full ASTB-E (OAR guide).
The exception is Army aviation: warrant officer flight training reads an ASVAB line score on top of the SIFT, a General Technical (GT) score of 110. An ASVAB taken years earlier for enlistment can still matter there, which is one reason to know your line scores.
One percentile against 7 composites
The ASVAB reports one number for enlistment, the AFQT 1–99 percentile, and line scores for jobs (ASVAB scores). The AFOQT reports 7 composites, each a percentile set against other officer applicants: Pilot, Combat Systems Officer, Air Battle Manager, Academic Aptitude, Verbal, Quantitative, Situational Judgment (AFOQT scores).
Minimums work differently too. An ASVAB floor belongs to the branch you enlist in, with the full list on ASVAB scores by branch. AFOQT floors belong to the officer path: one pair of Verbal and Quantitative minimums to commission, and a higher Pilot, CSO or ABM minimum for rated jobs.
Which one you need
ASVAB
The ASVAB is your test if…
- you are enlisting, in any branch
- your job depends on line scores, or you want Army warrant officer flight training (GT)
- you can test within a recruiter's schedule at MEPS or a MET site
AFOQT
The AFOQT is your test if…
- you want an Air Force or Space Force commission
- you are aiming at a pilot, CSO or ABM slot
- you can set aside ~5 h with breaks at a Pearson VUE center
ASVAB or AFOQT: common questions
Which is harder, the AFOQT or the ASVAB?
Each is demanding in its own way. The AFOQT is longer, about 300 minutes with breaks against about 120 for the computer ASVAB; it is not adaptive, and its percentiles compare you with other officer applicants. The ASVAB adapts to you item by item and covers shop, electronics and mechanical subjects the AFOQT leaves out.
How is the AFOQT different from the ASVAB?
Purpose first: officer selection against enlistment. Subtests: 12 on the AFOQT, 9 scored areas on the ASVAB. Scoring: 7 composites against the AFQT plus line scores. Retakes: at least 90 days apart on the AFOQT; on the ASVAB, first retest after 1 calendar month, second retest 1 month after that, then 6 months between retests.
Is the ASTB-E the Navy's version of the AFOQT?
Roughly, for aviation: the ASTB-E selects pilots and flight officers for the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Coast Guard, and its first three subtests form the OAR used for other Navy officer programs. It is scored on its own scales, not as composites.
