OAR · scale and cut-offs
OAR scores and the Navy minimums behind them
Updated Nov 6, 2026 · facts checked Nov 6, 2026
The OAR is one score from 20 to 80 in one-point steps; most people score between 40 and 60. The cut-off that matters is the one in your program's authorization, not a Navy-wide number.
Reading a 20–80 rating
The number is scaled rather than a percentage: a 50 does not mean half right, and on adaptive subtests the items you see depend on your earlier answers.
The report carries a single OAR score; no subtest scores are reported, so it cannot show where your points went. Use a practice set split by subtest for that, like the one on the practice test.

One Navy-wide minimum
Prep sites often quote a single service-wide minimum. None of the program authorizations we checked in November 2026 sets one: each designator has its own floor, waiver band and immediate-selection score. Copies of an older intelligence authorization that allowed waivers also still circulate; the July 2025 edition allows none.
Pilot and flight officer applicants
Pilot and NFO programs judge the aviation ratings, AQR with PFAR or FOFAR, not this cut-off. Those come only from the full battery; the numbers are on ASTB-E scores.
Which OAR attempt counts
- Score of record: your latest attempt counts, even if it is lower, whatever version you took. A lower retake replaces a higher score.
- Limit: three attempts at most, 30 full days apart, counted with ASTB-E sittings; details on exam facts.
- Expiry: NAMI publishes no expiry; old scores from forms 1–5 stay valid until you take the ASTB-E.
Other designators (Civil Engineer Corps, Information Warfare and more) each publish an authorization of their own; we have not verified them, so ask your recruiter for the current one.

OAR scores, in short
What score does Surface Warfare require?
Surface Warfare Officer: 42 on your most recent OAR; waivers considered from 39 to 42; 50 for immediate selection (Program Authorization 100, June 2025). Program minimums change; check with your recruiter.
Can a waiver cover a score below the minimum?
Sometimes. The 2025 authorizations allow waivers just under the floor for Surface Warfare and Supply Corps, and none for Intelligence.
Is there a score for each subtest?
No. You get one score, from 20 to 80.
What is the highest possible score?
80 is the ceiling; the range begins at 20 and climbs one point at a time.
