AFOQT Table Reading at ten seconds a cell

Updated Nov 6, 2026facts checked Nov 6, 2026

Table Reading gives you a grid of numbers with X values across the top and Y values down the side, and asks for the number where a given X and Y meet. Each lookup is easy; 40 of them at about 10 seconds each is the test. It counts toward all three rated composites.

How Form T sets up Table Reading

  • The grid: X runs left to right along the top row, Y runs top to bottom along the left column, both centered on zero with negative and positive values.
  • The item: one X value and one Y value; the options are numbers from the grid, several of them from cells next to the right one.
  • The clock: the most items per minute of any AFOQT subtest except Block Counting, so this is a speed test.
  • On the real test: many items share one large table; each question here carries its own smaller grid.

  1. 52 is one row and one column off, at X = 0, Y = −1, a diagonal neighbor of the right block.
  2. Find X = +1 in the top row and Y = 0 in the left column; the block where they cross holds 51.
  3. 49 comes from reading the coordinates the wrong way round, X = 0, Y = +1, with X and Y traded.
  4. 53 is the neighbor to the right (X = +2); the eye drifted one column along the row.
  5. 50 is one column off, at X = 0 in the same row, a slip of one block sideways.

Your tally shows here once every question above has an answer.

A method that holds up at speed

  1. Say the pair to yourself in order: X, then Y. The order is fixed for the whole subtest, so build the habit until you never have to think about it.
  2. Column first. Find X in the top row and keep your eye or a finger on that column.
  3. Then the row. Find Y in the left column and slide across to the column you are holding. Check the sign of both values as you land, because the grid repeats similar numbers on both sides of zero.
  4. Match and move on. The options are built from cells around the answer, so compare the number you found with the options rather than recalculating. Do not double-check every item; double-check none and keep the pace.
  5. Last 15 seconds. Mark something for every item left. Form T has no penalty for a wrong answer.

The slips Table Reading is built to catch

Three habits cost points here: reading Y along the top as if it were X, landing on the row or column next door when the eye drifts, and dropping a minus sign. They all get worse with fatigue, and Table Reading comes late in the day, after the long Part A. Practice it when you are tired, not only when you are fresh.

The skill is the same kind of fast visual lookup as Instrument Comprehension, and the two together carry real weight in the Pilot composite. More Table Reading items, mixed with other subtests, are in the AFOQT practice test.

Table Reading on the AFOQT

How many Table Reading questions are on the AFOQT?

Form T has 40, more than any other Part B subtest, in one of the shortest time limits.

Which composites use AFOQT Table Reading?

Pilot, CSO and ABM: every rated composite. It does not count toward Verbal or Quantitative.

Can you get faster at Table Reading?

Yes, more than at most subtests. The lookup itself is mechanical, so timed repetition with the X-then-Y habit raises both speed and accuracy.
