Word Knowledge asks for the word that means most nearly the same as another, either alone or inside a sentence. It shares the tightest pace of the battery with Shop Information, well under a minute per item, and it counts toward the AFQT through Verbal Expression.
The bare word: a single word and four choices; you have only the word itself to go on.
The word in a sentence: the sentence tells you which sense of the word is meant, so take in the sentence first and the choices second.
What is tested: general vocabulary, asked as "most nearly means", the wording of the samples on officialasvab.com.

the other subtests
Word Knowledge and Shop Information leave the least time per item on the computer version. If a word is unknown, pick the likeliest choice and move on; staring at it rarely turns a guess into an answer, and the clock keeps running.

Q1 of 15 · Word Knowledge (WK)
A teacher had to intervene before the argument turned into a fight. Intervene most nearly means
Leaving would not stop the fight; intervening means getting involved.
Looking on means watching without acting, the opposite of what the teacher did.
To intervene is to come between people or events to change what happens — to step in.
Your tally shows here once every question above has an answer.
Vocabulary traps on Word Knowledge
Related is not the same. A choice that often appears next to the word (a tool for a job, a feeling for an event) is a distractor, not a synonym.
False friends. Some words mean the opposite of what they sound like: enervate means weaken, noisome means foul-smelling, restive means restless, nonplussed means puzzled, and inflammable means the same as flammable.
Prefixes with two meanings.In- can mean "not" (inactive) or "into" (inject); check the rest of the word.
The wrong sense. Many words have several meanings; in a sentence item, only the one that fits the sentence is right.
Part of speech. The synonym has to work in the same slot; a noun is not replaced by a verb.
Building vocabulary for the ASVAB
Lists of "ASVAB words" are a start, but roots and prefixes go further: bene- (good), mal- (bad), -cede (go), chron- (time), -phobia (fear). Learn a few new words a day with an example sentence, and read anything with a wider vocabulary than you speak with. The same reading also helps Paragraph Comprehension.
Synonyms on the AFOQT
All of this site's vocabulary drills live on this page. The AFOQT has its own Word Knowledge section, 25 items in a far shorter limit per word, covered on AFOQT word knowledge. Its analogy section uses the same vocabulary in a different format; see Verbal Analogies.
